I agree about Gary. Merle Oberon is pretty fantastic - got some real character to her face. Gary tops them all.
ReplyDeleteElegance on Friday. I'm looking forward to your novels and shorts. Did you know Merle Oberon had been married to Robert Wolders, Audrey Hepburn's last companion? What a lucky man.

i'm most certainly looking forward to reading more of your expanded version on these beauties...
ReplyDeletePicking one's ten from your list is far more difficult than I expected, since I think a devastating beauty is someone who is not just physically beautiful, but EEE's etymological analysis in an earlier post helped. I broke my ten down as follows: those whose beauty laid waste to others - the La Belle Dame Sans Merci types; those whose beauty might have been a poor consolation for the difficulties that surrounded them; those whose beauty seemed to destroy them; and those whose beauty was so unearthly that it was not destined to last. So, in the first category, the Maharani of Baroda and Diana Mitford. In the second, Lee Radziwill and Queen Fawzia. In the third, Donyale Luna, Evelyn Nesbit, and Edie Sedgwick. In the fourth -those whose beauty was so sublime - Tina Chow and Stephen Tennant. And then for my tenth - someone who created beauty around her but who may not have had the full happiness she should have had - Pauline de Rothschild.
ReplyDeleteDMC- it does prove difficult. I also though Evelyn Nesbit was an excellent selection when I saw her on a list, here again, so very many ways to consider the names. I too-looked at the devastating aspect of beauty and how it can effect ones life- all of these are definitely in that category. I think we agree on 4 which is quite amazing really. GT
