She knew. She wore it well.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor's sense of dress was like a John Fowler interior: everything made sense, everything fitted together.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely colour indeed. I wonder who first came up with it—Mainbocher? Would be interesting to know. It's a gentle shade.
ReplyDeleteKarena- a great observation,it does enhance most anyone's coloring.
ReplyDeleteEmile- that is a perfect analogy. Must remember that! Perhaps why looking back, on WWW and Fowler please me so.
Aesthete,in the Menkes book, which I think is excellent, she does not say, as likely no one but Wallis could have known. Prior to her engagement- the Duchess was recorded by Cecil Beaton- as brawny, bullock in sapphire blue velvet. Later, a much more attractive Wallis-to Beaton anyway(likely that she was now a soon to be royal or sorts, wearing Mainbocher- W marries the Prince in a severe sapphire blue dress and jacket-and faded it has to pale grey. I assume Wallis must have "created" it-like in the ready made dress or suit she would have picked up here or there. I think you are right-Mainbocher must have been the 1st to do her up in it- officially. pgt
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, I read in a blog post recently that one can now rent the estate of the Duke and Duchess in France.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, stunning and sooo very classy. What a gorgeous colour and post. Love from London x
ReplyDeleteI will never look at that shade of blue from now on and not think of her...and of you! xx

ReplyDeletePer Donna Baker's comment, see my recent post on renting Le Moulin de Tuilerie. We should have a blogger's conference there, non?
