I, too, wonder about what his life would have been like if he lived in today's more open society. Surely he belongs to the list of lost in battle against the small and the almighty. Always sadden by the small sum his books brought. Some purchased merely for the opportunity to burn. Great post, LA. Both Playmakers and Deep Dish are having different plays now by that most talented and tragic figure Congratulations. So informative and about someone whose art is so timeless .His plays and sayings will stay with us a long time. There was once a TV show on his life.I sure wish I could find it to watch again. The scene of him having to do hard physical labor always stayed with me. . Such a waste..where would he have gone if Lloyd Alfred Douglas had not appeared in his life.Probably there might have been another on the scene. It's ambiguous, isn't it...Loved the post.

It's ambiguous, isn't it? On one hand, as you say, Oscar's guests and friends would have been invited into the library where Oscar held court, reading aloud to friends from his own work or that of others. Moving about the room, a cigarette in hand, full of energy.... He invited people in, he shared his space, he laid it all open to inspection.

On the other hand, he wanted to keep his inner sanctum totally private and personal. Clearly he rejected the Victorian traditions that everyone else in the universe seemed to value. And even more importantly, he did all his private stuff in that library: his writing and his collecting.

I think Whistler was very sensible in refusing Wilde's offer. No artist or atisan can realise a person's personal dream, as well as the owner of that dream can.Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.com
