I've always been so intrigued by this Horst photograph of Mrs. Charles Fuller's Connecticut porch. I Love this table size food screen-a Japanese gauze fly guard. Its tentlike coverage with fine screening is brilliant for waylaying pesky flying things. Horst photographed and published Mrs.Fuller's home in the now covetable Vogue's Book of Houses Gardens People.
The house-once a church-was so tempting Mrs. Fuller purchased the property by telephone.
Intriguing- all the interiors- and I will share them as the summer progresses. It is a good mix of Bohemian elements all set within the 1889 stained glass Victorian structure. In fact several photographs transport us to the houses on the Bosporus.
Intrigued?
What do you do that takes you away right on your own back porch?

O.K....you'll think I'm mad..but in the evening...sun about to set....I take an ice cold cocktail out to my screen porch. The view from my sofa..over the rooftop of my neighbor's house, is a 150ft. tall pine. It's a leaner, with crazy twisting branches, and it looks like Africa to me...and I let it take me there.
ReplyDeletegreat photo! love the vintage "tint".
ReplyDeleteoh what do i do to get carried away.......? eat, look at world of interiors. well and of course read travel and cookbooks.
kind of an original response, huh? (not!)
thanks for asking though!
It is the heat of summer, porches & perfumes, both indespensible. Love your mind, Miss Gaye. Barbara
ReplyDeleteVodka tonics... Sunflowers... Kisses, the stars and the moon. The sound of the Ocean, the breeze.... ah summer nights love:)
ReplyDeleteSince it is not a screened porch, I'd say the mosquitoes.
ReplyDeleteWe do have a back porch, a modest one, but during the summer we sit out on the porch and listen to the sounds of Summer. We dine outside and come in on the porch when the bugs start to light.

Food screen or How to make a photo into a canvas. Impressive!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to say fireflies, but I'll take nice glass of Pastis or can I dream of the Bosphorus with you and say, Raki?
Oooh, can't wait to see more photos of this house/porch/garden and learn more about the inhabitants.
ReplyDeleteMy garden is tiny but delightful, and just sitting in it quietly with a book and/or a cat is like a mini vacation.
The photograph is beautiful...like an impressionist painting. Oh and a cool summer breeze, that takes me away....
ReplyDeleteHow odd, my family also had these funny umbrella things! In fact recently while helping my mother clean out a storage room in the house where she has lived for over 40 yrs. we threw out 2 of them. In case anyone is interested-they were made very well. They had turned painted red wooden final tops w/tassels and the netting was a very pale blue w/a lace edge. They popped open and closed just like a good rain umbrella.
