about ART

.

"Any great work of art revives and readapts time and space, and the measure of its success is the extent to which it makes you an inhabitant of that world." Leonard Bernstein

Picasso's Guernica

recent comments about some of the Art here being inappropriate- I say what Bernstein said.
Art is powerful
& It is Feared by those in power.
the republican led the House votes to de fund NPR

  1. I don't understand Art and inappropriate....Its supposed to make you think and question... you always post such great Art. One of my favorites, Picasso was besides being such a creative artist, a masterful draughtsman

  2. What comes after NPR--didn't the Nazi's do a few hat tricks like that. I'm saddened that our wonderful country can only fund wars and defund any entity that speaks the truth in opposition.

  3. Gaye,

One of Picasso's most brilliant and important works of art. I agree with Bernstein as well.

  4. Thank you for this. "Artists are the antennas of society", I forget who said this possibly Max Ernst.
Is this kill the messenger time in America?

I Have a friend a writer in Austin who told me "I put up a blog post about my new garden, and made a couple of offhand remarks about conservatives. The blog got picked up by this other blogger who has a huge following. Thus I woke up to an inbox full of hate mail, including an anonymous death threat. Really, it is totally insane here in the States."

  5. People who do not appreciate the value of art as a part of their own lives, or to the whole of society, are sleepwalking through life.

  6. Kaveri, Karena- I think Picasso was the Genius of the Art world. There are other artists I may prefer-but none I revere as I do Picasso. This work is the best political statement in the art world and still stands as a protest against war-in this case it is a culture war- and that is the war for power.

  7. jones-yes my own thoughts run to this conclusion. The continuing of this bill to the Senate will I likely end it-but it is important the agenda of the Rep led house to tear apart every positive social program be emphasized and discussed. I wish more blogs would air this a bit-but most like mine stay away from the controversy of politics. thank you for the comment here today. pgt

  8. Mark- that is true. what concerns me is that the sleepwalkers have control of the House which means there are a lot of sleepwalking voters out there- who may be getting more than they bargained for, to the detriment of society. It won't get better til people who care speak out.

  9. Debra, Austin seems to be holding the line in texas. I had planned to link some of the most outrageous propaganda from a blogger in Texas last weekend on a post similar to this and decided not to for that very reason. There are those crying for their freedom of speech but would hate- just to stop someone else. (skeptically I know--- I believe big brother is watching now-though it might not be him but our neighbor) Gaye

  10. Mark is right. But does that make those who only appreciate art for the pricetags lucid dreamers?

  14. LA, an infelicitous typo, had to pull the comment. I think others made the case, anyway. As for our arrows, they are (at least) half-expected. :)

  15. Such a stunning piece; how I'd love to see it in person one day.

NPR: such a threat to America. I'm glad the GOP has devoted so much of its time to trying to defeat public radio -- which, you know, is reeeally such a problem -- instead of focusing on things like unemployment, the deficit, climate change, the ongoing energy crisis, ....

    :o(
