To look almost pretty is an acquisition of higher delight to a girl who has been looking plain for the first fifteen years of her life than a beauty from her cradle can ever receive. -Jane Austen

ReplyDeleteI wonder if she really had fabulous style, or if she just had the good sense to entrust those who did.
ReplyDeleteYou saw the announcement from HH of the new new new Wallis. "Where will it ever end, Nurse?"
ReplyDeleteWent to style.com - 82 picks!! Wow Gaye where do you find the time? But all fabulous of course. And TDC brings up a good point especially if, as you say, her style really took a bump up with her association with her Prince.
ReplyDeleteOh, to have her wardrobe! Have a wonderful weekend xx
ReplyDeleteBruce, You are so right- I know I would!
ReplyDeleteDevoted- I do think so- once she found what worked- she never deviated- and of course there were Dior, Marc Bohan, Givenchy and so on to help her.
Laurent- No, do tell!
ReplyDeleteQ. it is def. a over time project! I think she definitely dressed with that tailored severity for him- and of course she liked it too! The quote i think reflects how she felt about clothes giving her cache-and then of course there was the Duke.
ReplyDeleteChristina- No kidding! gaye
she had the most unhappy face I may have ever seen. To me....it didn't really matter what she had on. Her miserable life was all over her face. I find her to be totally tragic. Lonely , and missing friends and warmth; she sought beauty. Nothing warm and cuddly.......really a sad case. She "caught him" but that was a miserable "gilded cage" for both of them.
ReplyDeleteSad.
Just popped over to see your posts on the Duchess as I am in the middle of Anne Sebbas biography. The study of her by Beaton is beautiful and probably the most flattering image of her I have come across, I am guessing that is what the Austin quote alludes to. I get the impression from Beatons Diaries, well, The Parting Years anyway, that he was rather fond of Wallace.
