The New Colossus

.

(all photographs credit below)

Not (but of late) like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name, Mother of Exiles.
Men seek to keep her chained-just burning dull ember.

From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she with silent lips.

Yet is it pomp We now seek?
What will become of  words that once beckoned All?

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these,
the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

 ECHOES

Late-born and woman-souled I dare not hope
The freshness of the elder lays, the might
Of manly, modern passion shall alight
Upon my Muse's lips, nor may I cope
(Who veiled and screened by womanhood must grope)
With the world's strong-armed warriors and recite
The dangers, wounds, and triumphs of the fight;
Twanging the full-stringed lyre through all its scope.
But if thou ever in some lake-floored cave
O'erbrowed by rocks, a wild voice wooed and heard,
Answering at once from heaven and earth and wave,
Lending elf-music to thy harshest word,
Misprize thou not these echoes that belong
To one in love with solitude and song.
Emma Lazarus

For the moment- the issue of Planned Parenthood funding for women's healthcare is tenuously secure. There is in fact actually  only about 3%  of  Planned Parenthood's  total resources go to fund abortion services, with the rest going to various screening and other women's health services. In accordance with the Hyde Amendment no federal money can be used for abortion services.  Friday- just prior to midnight a government shutdown was averted, Senator Jon Kyl took to the Senate floor with this Big Lie.

The Big Lie will be heard again- and if it is heard long enough- like all lies-it gathers believers. This is what the Senator is hoping, but for the moment, Planned Parenthood carries on- until the next fight.

  1. Thanks for giving voice to Women's pleas. My heart aches from the darkness of politicians.

  2. The meanness of it all is most dispiriting, repulsive, and wearing.

  3. I have enjoyed your blog for a long time and always thought that essentially you wrote about beauty.Your posting today is not about beauty. It is about horror--the horror of murder at a mother's hand.It is the horror of a mother choosing to have her baby cut up and sucked out of the safety of her body.It is the horror of a tiny, beating heart being thrown in a trash can and taken to a dump.It is the horror of a life willingly cut short-never to see, hear or enjoy the wonders of this world that you have the privilege of enjoying.Shame, shame on those who hold on so dearly to their own lives but carelessly and casually deny life to millions of others.

  4. Virginia, I am sorry you have misinterpreted the essence of little augury- it is about seeing things as they are- or were.As to beauty- it is looking beyond the surface of any object or person- You missed the essence of this post as well- It is NOT about abortion and the right for a woman to have possession of her body- it is about women being healthy- If You think PP is breaking the law and using federal funds for abortions-call your congressman and ask for an investigation- did you read the links, it might all help you come to a better understanding?

only about 3% of Planned Parenthood's total resources go to fund abortion services, with the rest going to various screening and other women's health services. In accordance with the Hyde Amendment no federal money can be used for abortion services.

the larger picture beyond Planned Parenthood and it being bargained about like a poker chip (that is women) is the tired and poor are sacrificed as always when the govt is looking for a way out of financing war- not to mention the poor are always the people doing the fighting.

it would be a loss to see your patronage of my page here go- if you feel that is what you must do-I respect that, but I would be wasting my time here if all I did was show pretty pictures and tell pretty stories. this page would not be my own-and in the end it does belong to me.
highest regards to you and your truth-Gaye Tapp

  5. This rider has at least been denied, but when are we as a people going to see that those who use false statements to deny the rights of women to medical care... when are we going to turn them out? People who can afford to pay the going rate are not at risk, but those who cannot should see that their sisters get the help they need to survive cancers... by joining the vote to sunder the Tea Party and its billionaire associates in their tracks, taking back what TP considers their mandate to harm at least 20% of the population just to create a hue and cry against something not paid by public funds in any event.

  6. Virginia, I worked at Reproductive Services for years. If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one.

    1. I'm glad you mentioned the Republican attack on women's right with their movement to kill Planned parenthood.
we must all expose the Republicans for what they are: misogynist, rascist and the fact that they say they speak for Amerrrica' is a terrible falsehood. We have to speak up and defend our hard won rights.
    I love your site.

2.Fantastic. Thank you so much. Your courageous voice is much needed.

I also admire Niki de Saint Phalle. During the 1980s I visited a home filled with her art--I think my host was a relative of hers. I'd never heard of her before, but I fell in love with her work.

On behalf of me and my daughters, thank you once again.

somehow, i just knew you were going to make the transition from herb ritts to emma lazarus. just imagine that statue out in the harbor changing for an afternoon to mlle neith.

it was bernard shaw i think, who, on his first shipboard arrival in america, was asked by a reporter what he thought.'who put that damned statue out there!'

  10. In giving women the right to make choices about her body, it does not necessarily mean someone condones an abortion. It means the body of a woman is a woman's own. Those that hate abortion only seem to think a woman makes that choice carelessly and as a means of birth control which is ridiculous. It is between her possibly a man or her husband, her doctor and God, if she believes. It is not for others to judge her especially Congress. The body that calls itself lawmakers can do nothing other than moralize and politicize and with a woman no less. Why is a fetus' life more important than a woman's?

  11. G....you are my hero...Thank you for this "beautiful" truth post. I watched Jon Kyle in horror yesterday. His lie is now part of the Congressional Record of The United States of America. If he had any other job he would have been shamed and fired immediately. I'm so tired of men (and some women) treating women and the poor as if they are misbehaving children with no common sense, intelligence, decency, or feelings. I appreciate your courage and artistic expressions on this....Today I am your biggest fan...k

  12. Posting of the Week, and then some. To Reggie's comment, nothing could possibly be added of one's perception, but the selection and publication of the illustrations assuredly raised and focused the matter for many of us on a new level. This was a breathtakingly crafted and moving presentation, on as grave a matter of human dignity as can be .. conceived.
