How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be ''American'' before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, and having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?

  3. Edith Wharton's novels influenced me immensely. I still think she nails it all in her work-society, its hypocrisy-its necessity. To answer her question posed maybe 100 + years ago-Never.
