Another recommendation from one of my readers-and it did not disappoint -The Honey Pot. It's based on the 1606 black comedy Volpone by Ben Johnson (Volpone is Italian for "sly fox). For a number of reasons, as I became acclimated to the late 60's style-clothes, make-up, hair- I couldn't help thinking things have improved aesthetically-or maybe they've just leveled off. The sets were glamourous-yet almost too much so-not so authentic as I might thought for a movie set in Venice-but it was the 60's- 1967 to be exact & if you watch you'll find that I wasn't just being difficult or imagining things.Capucine, Rex Harrison & Edie Adams play in The Honey Pot
The Exterior shots of the movie couldn't be more authentic. The Venetian Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel on the Rio della Panada was used in the film.
So what's so off about the 60's ,well not so much-but It has yet to "date" well. Perhaps it hasn't been quite long enough-just beyond the half century mark, or maybe it just takes one more decade for it to wear well-or at least better. Leafing through 60's Vogue magazines- I couldn't be happier with the era. It's when things start moving that I want to go back to the earlier black and white films or forward to the Age of Merchant Ivory. The Honey Pot plot takes some wonderful twists and turns to my delight and I couldn't be more enchanted by any Rex Harrison performance-always a winning performance. Maggie Smith starts out slowly in the movie as a namby pamby nurse- but later you'll love her as she takes on the entire cast for Best Performance of them All.

Can't wait to watch this on Netflix-it's at the top of my heap
merci

Carol, I agree about the Maggie Smith photograph- so often and I think due to her stellar acting abilities we as an audience don't take in her beauty. I selected this photograph for that very reason. As I say here-the hair "do's" All very bouffant and short and teased-except Capucine, alas Maggie's is a tight curled perm. I think you will enjoy this one. PGT
ReplyDeleteit's now #1 on my netflix list -what a cast!
ReplyDeleteStefan, I think you will love it. let me know. pgt
ReplyDeleteDear Little Augury, I am flattered and gratified that you enjoyed the film and in particular the interiors of "The Honey Pot." May I suggest another pair of films? For a darker set of interiors, get "Onegin" with Ralph Fiennes and Liv Tyler. It is based on Puskin's Eugene Onegin. The Russian interiors are most sympathetic to the characters and the action. I want a library such as appears at the beginning: stark and serious. And look for "Boom"
ReplyDelete(1968) with Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Noel Coward (who plays the part of the witch/warlock) in the film version of Tennesse Williams "The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Any More." The interiors are of an exotic, Mediteranean, dream-like capriccio. Not the actors' best film but what a set! A house set on a rock in the ocean; unsettling and bracing. Thank you, David
I love the sconce in the dumbwaiter!

i've always loved this movie (though the ending is soooooo draaaaawn out). rex harrison is good anytime, anywhere and his monologue is delivered in such an earnest manner i nearly expected him to have improvised it himself.
ReplyDeletecapucine has long been an obsession of mine. it was such a tragedy the way she exited life
I love M.Smith! Capucine was the most special and elegant actress at that time.I think she died alone in Switzerland..You did a GREAT job!
ReplyDeleteI had already put this in my queue when your reader David suggested it. Now I am really excited to watch it!
ReplyDeleteis it possible for you to be more
ReplyDeletefabulous?
nah!!!
David, wonderful to hear from you on this. the movie was terrific, I checked on the BOOM film and it is not available on Nflix yet. Sounds great. I have seem and Onegin and am in complete agreement with your assessment. I actually used a couple of images of it and referenced it in a post about a fellow blogger artist-Lauren, here is the link- (toward the end of the post)

John- I have one just like it, maybe it is one of these set pieces! I will have to tie it in a bit soon.PGT
ReplyDeleteKathryn, "rex harrison is good anytime, anywhere and his monologue is delivered in such an earnest manner i nearly expected him to have improvised it himself." SO TRUE. His dancing sequences made me smile and smile again. He is a delight in the movie.
ReplyDeleteCapucine holds up beautifully in the movie-well anywhere. How gorgeous she was-and really that hair is flawless. I have in my sidebar a link to the series Devastating Beauties-of which She was selected as one. I think these exquisite women-with their real life tragedies are still riveting. I hope you'll check that out, PGT

Renee- I hope so, but have no aspirations of the heights you place me in, but I am flattered and humbled. PGT
