Beyond CHIC

.
I could not agree more with Ivan Terestchenko's new book title-his photographs are just that. As a longtime fan of his work-I have in past gotten peeks of his beautiful work for W, ELLE, Casa VOGUE Italy by keeping up with his blog posts.

BEYOND CHIC is his oeuvre of photographs from years of stepping beyond the confines of the runway and magazine pages into the private world of couturiers, stylists, muses and fashion taste makers. Speaking about some of these images in 2011 here- Ivan said the photographs speak for themselves- and the book speaks volumes.

If you love fashion-(of course you do), love design-and wonder what happens in the homes of fashions' arbiters-Ivan captures it in Beyond Chic.

For twenty plus years Ivan has been trespassing with his unique eye-(like no other)-and his camera to record these rooms: Chanel's august rooms-both Maxime and Loulou de La Falaise's digs, the divine Franca Sozanni's exotic Marrakesh riad and the Paris duplex of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge. Ivan photographed the Saint Laurent-Berge homes for the The Private World's Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge-another must have for your library.

I've just teased with a glimpse of a few rooms in the over 350 pages of Beyond Chic. I marvel at the language of Ivan's camera-19 "portraits" are introduced with a brief on the subject and the space-some with actual portraits of the subject-but certainly they aren't a necessity. Ivan's sense of the who- the how-and the where emerge before our eyes in Beyond Chic's pages and the aesthetic that drives their work is evident.

The book is Ivan's Testament to Chic-and that- for Ivan- is beyond Chic-where A Life is Lived.

  1. I love these photos--they all evoke such distinct personalities. I do have one small cavil with the cover shot. Although wonderful in general, the large bust on the mantle seems unstable and makes me uneasy that it could fall.
