to those dissenters, what's not to Love?
from the MET: The dressing gown featured here is an extraordinary piece of hand work. The use of many different lively roller print patterns gives it an eye popping appeal and makes this piece a sampler of the various patterning from this period. Roller printing was introduced and then patented in 1783 in an attempt to reduce the cost of copperplate printing as well as to ease the printing process of small, repeat patterns.

I cannot even imagine cutting out the diamond pieces--and then hand sewing them together. Just too much, but absolutely gorgeous. Thanks.

No-me either Mary. My grandMA did cut out tiny square to create patchwork quilts-She said-"just to keep her hands busy." those days are over. pgt
DeleteHoly kamoly! If this is what the original owner wore around the house, one wonders what they wore they wore when they really got dressed up. If it were mine, I might just lie around the house all day and never get dressed at all. At any rate, it puts an end to any nonsense about patchwork's being a thrifty way to re-use old clothes.

Magnaverde-it's really quite amazing. I am in absolute agreement. I am so drawn to patchwork for its color and history. Thanks for stopping in.pgt
DeleteWoW - I want one! So hard to get patchwork for men. Now I am fat, old and retired and can wear what I like around the house I have a had time finding things. Oddly I have really started to envy you girls and all the beautiful choices of clothing you have and wonder why on earth no one makes these kind of wonderful garments for us chaps. If you know anyone making full patchwork house coats for older gentleman please put my name forward.
