CAMILLE SILVY*
Preeminent carte de visite portrait photographer of the1860's

"Silvy's rich chiaroscuro full-length portraits emphasized the texture and detail of dress and used painted backdrops to establish the status of his subjects. He created an aristocratic iconography which evidently appealed to Beaton, who preserved examples of Silvy's work in his own scrap-albums."

(from Phillippe Garner & David Alan Mellor
Cecil Beaton Photographs 1920-1970.)

  1. Little A--

    This is rather wonderful.

I wish I had a crinoline--and a carte de visite like this one.

Who do you think she went to 'visite'? I hope someone equally alluring.

    1. Hello,
I have an original carte de visite of Princess Alice in a similar pose as to the one above. It is stamped on the reverse with Camil Silvy, 4th July 1861 and in excellent condition. I can appreciate your above comment is over four years old, but if you would be interested in acquiring this, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is p.cov1@hotmail.co.uk
      Regards
      Peter

  2. I would bet it to be her Prince- Louis. Apparently a real love match. Poor Alice after nursing her children, died at age 35.

The dress is wonderful- I have been reading a good deal of Cecil Beaton- and where to start with him? It can not be done- so I will continue to do little things for everyone to enjoy. I am sure you have read his book about his Aunt Jessie- I do love it. I have just finished Ashcombe. gt
