deleting Valentino

.
the elegant Giancarlo Giammetti a driving force and creator of the famed house of VALENTINO-wrote on facebook about the couture show collection designed by the house heirs-Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, he was "just speechless" and he was "not sad...just surprised....We have always supported the new designers and we love them, but this time we have to distance ourselves from this ridiculous circus."

Wouldn't you?

  1. I am thinking that I sound like one of those people who always say that everything was better in the past.... but facts are facts and fashion has been so terrible lately, I am sticking to jeans, a white shirt, simple cashmere sweaters as a staple for everyday. If want something fun, I'll give my money to Zara, Mango or J.Crew. For evening, I can borrow from my designer friends that are far and above what I have seen from the established designers recently. Maybe the upcoming Fashion week will bring improvement, and if not, maybe it'll bring young talented and commercial viable designer to the fore front.
I don't care if a big name goes bust when it produces horrors after horrors.

  3. Ouch.
I wonder if they regret retirement now.

  4. Oh No this is not good, Valentino's designs are such classic elegance!

  5. They have no comprehension of what "Valentino" signifies to haute couture. This is sad.

  6. I am fortunate to have met many a designer who created the aura of glamour and elegance for few of the elite society. Fashion now is catering to the elite celebrity which therein lies the lack of elegance and perhaps etiquette. This would be perfect for Lady GaGa.

  7. What precisely did Valentino and his partner think was going to happen? That the house was going to be encased in amber and the Valentino successors would merely serve as handmaidens to his greatest hits? I hate the second dress but I applaud the designers for not trying to send a Valentino simulacrum down the runway.

  8. Ack. OUCH. It hurts just reading that, and I'm not even the one who designed it! As for the dress, the thing I dislike most are the bulky arms...kind of awkward. Otherwise, I agree with Aesthete.

I really get the sense that they tried to capture the essence of Valentino without regurgitating the same, safe old designs, even bring it up to date. As a brand, Valentino has a reputation for being elegant, classic, but also OLD FASHIONED and dare I say it, boring. There's a way to be simultaneously elegant, sexy, edgy and current (Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy epitomizes this), and I think that this is what the new designers at Valentino are shooting for. Whether or not they've attained it, that's debatable. But I look forward to seeing how they develop the brand's aesthetic, the reinvigoration could be exciting. Lauren

  9. Hope everyone will read my follow up- Not being able to touch couture and buying good Donna Karan, Calvin, Oscar & a some Chanel-etc in the 90', I now cringe to pay the rtw price today- I love to see the artistry of couture- I don't love the work of the most recent pair-by any stretch. Yes, infusing youth is important, A. Fanchinetti-V.'s 1st pick-seems to have begun beautifully to bridge the staid V and the modern. Fascinating too- how her designs were easily evolving and the new pair went for copying V to deconstructing it-extreme.there are only one or 2 pieces that have any of the V. notes in them. If this is interesting go look at the work of both since V. left. Beating a hasty retreat might not have been the best thing unless they were ready to let go-I think they missed the mark by letting Fanchenetti go too soon.
