The List: a Singer Songwriter's PhD

.

I saw Roseanne Cash at Duke's Page Auditorium this week. Steeped in the deepest roots of American music-the Carter Family and daughter of iconic Johnny Cash- Roseanne Cash has mastered the art of writing a perfectly crafted lyric. Her music, her voice and the control she maintains over it all is a performance called The List. At the age of 18, her father gave her a list of 100 Songs, it was her Education- he said. He must have known this daughter would be forever immersed in Music. Roseanne learned her lessons well- Performing just a few songs from the List of 100, Roseanne was joined on stage by Bruce Springsteen for a duet. He happened to be on campus and sang Sea of Heartache (on the List) and recorded it for the List album.*

Read my niece Liz's interview with Roseanne Cash here  it is pretty great I must say.
*Rosanne Cash has been nominated for a 2010 Grammy for "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for Sea of Heartbreak, a duet with Bruce Springsteen that appears on her critically acclaimed album The List.

  2. I've loved Rosanne Cash since 1981's "Seven Year Ache" - "My Baby Thinks He's a Train" was a favorite. Thanks for this post. I was unaware of the Bruce Springsteen duet.
