Every child is an artist.

The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. Picasso

 Picasso's Maya

the idea that school children should not be taught music and dance at school-but can get these immortal gifts at home is ludicrous.

“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again.

And what do we teach our children?

We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.

When will we also teach them what they are?

We should say to each of them:

Do you know what you are?

You are a marvel.

You are unique.

In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you.

Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.

You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven.

You have the capacity for anything.

Yes, you are a marvel.

And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?

You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.” Picasso

Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is dangerous.
Where it is chaste, it is not art. Picasso

Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don’t start measuring her limbs.  Picasso

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun. Picasso
Instead of efforts to protect and defend- there are those who insist on censure  and defund.
They can not see the sun.

  1. A beautiful and meaningful post to read on a saturday morning, listening to the Ode to Joy such an added pleasure. Yes, art is the essence of life with a soul.Sad that art gets so diluted and commercialized to the lowest degree. It should be an uplifting experience when one learn how to relate and understand the thoughts and the soul of the artist.

  2. Picasso's "Every child is an artist" quote is the one I chose as the motto for my business teaching art to children...it's actually printed on my business cards. We're fortunate in the PNW that our schools still teach the arts, quite heavily too, but it is always a concern that one day, they won't. Children need the right side of the brain awakened and nurtured just as much as they do the left...without the right being activated and used, the left will not shine to it's full capacity (and visa-versa).
Thank you for such a poignant post!

  3. This is about more than the censorship of art. This is really about "Christian" and "family" values being used to silence free speech. This continual and insidious corruption of the separation of Church and State must stop. Before it is too late.

  4. "Ludicrous" is right. More than, actually. It seems that we're always about to bear witness to a new degradation

Thank you for the 'Ode to Joy'

    Best as always,
