the garden

 .
...I feel myself a cog in something turning. And maybe it's the time of year, yes, said maybe it's the time of man.
And I don't know who I am but life is for learning.

...And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet planes riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden, we are caught in the devil's bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden. Joni Mitchell

  2. A millenium later and I still have the softest spot for old Joni.

  3. I was listening to a lot of Joni Mitchell lately as I was thinking of using her for my latest video. She was (and is) an amazing talent in many ways. What a flash from the past this post is - didn't realize Vogue did a spread on Woodstock - so hard to believe it was really that long ago!!

  4. Amazing post! I am of the age of Woodstock. I was nowhere near Woodstock; but from the very first picture of yours......I thought "Woodstock!"

I wonder how. I really don't remember very many pictures of it. It was anything but "mainstream"! Oops! It was in "Vogue"? That is why I remember it! And Vogue mainstreamed it! Aha!!

    Wonderful post!

    Delightful!

If it is "old Joni" it's old me! And I prefer to think of myself as "ageless"!!! Just hoping!

  5. Oh, the summer of 1969---Woodstock, Man on Moon, my father's death, Kent State in the near future, Vietnam protests, sit-ins...what years!!! There are many cogs at the moment. Where is the movement to rise up to sound the alarms and say enough? Mary

  6. oh! how dreamy. and beautiful. smell the incense and the vintage 40s fragrances stolen from a monied grandmother who funded the beaten up morris minor car that took them to Woodstock and a new way of living.

we are having supper with someone who lives in Woodstock tonight.

felt like serendipity reading your post.

    have a beautiful day.

NY is like New Orleans today - all dark brooding clouds, heavy humidity and trees hanging low with the dew.

  7. What a great article, then and now...there is nothing bourgeois or anything like that about the article...quite forward in its time giving context to Woodstock with works by the Impressionists, quotes from classic antiquity.
Love Join Mitchell as well...her songs and words are engraved in my heart.
    Loved this, Gaye.
    Warmly,
    Philip

  8. I was 10 in 1969-so W was only in the news-but I remember all the music vividly and cut my teeth on CSN&Y's song having a 16 year old musically absorbed brother. With Vreeland as editor-til 71,Vogue was in its glory years and she had it all in there-anything she could see style in-and IT was there moving mainstream fashion forward. The editorial side of this-- the likening to the Impressionists as Philip notes is irresistible , and how could I resist Joni.pgt

  9. Let it be said here first: that was me and my friend Tom, in the photo of the bathers at Woodstock. I remember that momement well. Even got three copies of that edition of Vogue (Dec. 1969), after hearing about it, and going into town to the Boston Public Library to view it. In celebration of the event of a lifetime, Bill.
