one of The Stars, one of the brightest and prettiest , one with the eyes of a child.Natalia

What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be not forever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
Grief not, rather find,
Strength in what remains behind,
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be,
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of Human suffering,
In the faith that looks through death
In years that bring philophic mind.
Be not forever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
Grief not, rather find,
Strength in what remains behind,
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be,
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of Human suffering,
In the faith that looks through death
In years that bring philophic mind.
-536.Ode, William Wordsworth
Orson Welles said of her as a child actress in her first film, she was "so good, she was terrifying, and from there to Miracle on 34th Street, to young ingenue in Rebel Without A Cause, All the Fine Young Cannibals, to Maria in West Side Story. Director Elia Kazan cast her in Splendour in the Grass for her "true-blue quality with a wanton side that is held down by social pressure," adding that "she clings to things with her eyes." She was 23 and this was her second Academy Award Nomination for the role of Deanie in Splendour. Then there was Gypsy, Inside Daisy Clover and on to Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice- there were more, but not quite enough.
& She somehow managed to stay so beautiful in 1960's and 1970's Hollywood.

She was very beautiful. Vogue from the 60s and 70s are a treat. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSo so beautiful and she has always been a personal favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteSO beautiful, this. Thank you. Curtis
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Hope you're well & having a great holiday weekend.
ReplyDeleteSITG is one of my very, very favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteShe was such a beauty.
Godard said of Ford's shot of John Wayne's scooping her off the desert floor in "The Searchers" that it was the most powerful image in cinema. I respect that it might have been equalled once or twice, but probably not by anything so unexpected, graceful and redeeming.
ReplyDeleteLinnea, Maryam, Gwen, Emily, we are all in agreement. One of my favorites to-especially from this era. So beautiful and talented. There are so many great movies she was in-and there are videos of her in interviews on you tube if you are interested.
ReplyDelete& Curtis-yes. Fundamentally head and shoulders above the rest of her time.
ReplyDeleteLaurent, She must have had many men in love with here. Elia Kazan's favorite scene in the movie was the last one,when Deanie and Bud see each other after some years, he said "It's terribly touching to me. I still like it when I see it." I think he must have loved her-mostly. pgt
ReplyDeleteWhen Natalie was in Raleigh filming "Brainstorm", she offered a woman bystander $$$ for a sweater the woman was wearing. She woman went home, took it off, went back to the site and sold it to Natalie for something over $100. It is too bad it was before the days of cell phones, else there would be a photo of it.
