ALI: LOVE story

.
1 of my IDOLS when I was growing up- ALI MacGRAW.
SO great to see her on the cover of Town & Country's February issue. No reveals- or pictures, but she still is beautiful-& still with such a unique look.

photographed for VOGUE August 1969

& Surprise!
ALI was 30 when she filmed Good-bye Columbus in 1969.
Never a starlet-always a STAR- better yet- the Anti-Star.

Here I am age- 10, in 1969- The Eyebrow-Is it NO wonder I LOVED ALI?

Who was your IDOL at the age of 10?

  1. Olivia Newton John-Grease...I just assumed I would be able to wear those black skin-tight pants when I grew up. Sadly no. Interestingly, like Ali McGraw...Olivia is still just as beautiful

  2. I don't think I had an idol but, at 10, I found France Nuyen in "South Pacific" to be the most beautiful girl in movies.

Several years later, Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady," was my favorite

  6. Jennifer- another era, but yes ONJ was indeed The Icon of the Day

KO- yes the beautiful ill fated love. I think as our earlier posts attest- Audrey Hepburn is a favorite- inner beauty wins out most times.

JES- SB and I share a birthday and I too have always found her fascinating. pgt

  7. Miss RAYNE, My niece and nephew thought I looked something like P Leia, I think it was the hair.

David, But confession is SO GOOD for the soul. My brother and I were Bobby Sherman fans too! pgt

  10. Q- No I was a tender ten- about 5 feet tall by then- I just failed to grow after about 10th grade. I was about my full ht by 13. And of course I was very mature for my age-it has sort a been a regression ever since. PGT

    F. Your secret is safe!!!! ogt

  11. Ah, Ali McGraw. Gorgeous pic in the freewheeling-in-the-streets-tradition that became popular with this photo in 1963:

My idol at the age of ten? Hmm, good question ... i think it was Franz. Beckenbauer, not Kafka. :)

    Happy new year!

  12. Princess Anne - because she was gutsy and rode horses. My ballet teacher forbid me to have riding lessons.

  13. When I was ten, I wanted to look like Audrey Hepburn. Unfortunately I am blond and way, way heavier than she ever was...but still to me she is an icon of style, grace, loveliness and fashion. Apart from having been a wonderful human being. But you are right Ali is special.

Take a look at these wonderful jewels, I am always in awe of the creativity and talent of this artist. www.chrox.com

What I also love are the jewels on this site - I cannot get enough of them. The artist is full of talent and the jewels seem to float in their settings. Take a peek www.chrox.com

  17. ray05-thank you for the link-an iconic cover to be sure. I had to google FB, good choice!

Bindy- such a good pick. She is an independent woman still.

Marinissima-Look forward to the link. Rarely do any of us match the looks of our idols- yet there is something we see, or sense in them that we relate to or Identify with. With AM, I know it was her looks- at the time I vividly remember feeling too mature looking, and oh the eyebrows. I was relieved to see AM-at the time a very different look from the typical models. Audrey Hepburn is such a model in so many ways- for me one of the most flawless beauties inside and out.

  19. DJS-ME TOO, except for the singing which I am curse with-knowing all the words and barely being able to carry a tune! For me -it was that Umbrella and the bottomless carpet bag. She was magical in every way-the books are even better.
I need to visit your site-can you send me a link-I know about the voice talk blog- and it is listed here, but it seems you have a new one-but I was not sure how to get there. PGT

  20. Vanessa Redgrave.
    I was besotted with Camelot.

Of course, earlier it had been Hayley Mills.
    She was pale, like me!

  21. How nice of you to feature Ali, she is a friend of mine and I see her when I am in Santa Fe. She is a most gracious person.

I always admired Grace Kelly. In 1976 or so, I met her old boyfriend Oleg Cassini and he shared some rather personal things about her with me. I liked her even more after that!

Your blog is beautiful, and thoughtful. I appreciate the effort you put into it and I am thrilled I discovered it, and you.

  24. I loved Ali too. I first loved her in LOVE STORY. I had that eyebrow thing too, PGT. In college I plucked them til they were pencil thin and very hideous. I laugh now and just enjoy them, although they are nothing compared to my younger days.

And yes, I will admit I also loved in this chronological order, Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, and Donny Osmond.

Yes to the carpet bag and all its magic!

  26. Pamela, I think there are a number of Haley Mills fans that read too.

Lisa, gee thanks but Ali was so unique, I have to credit her with my own coming to terms with some aspects of my looks. Think my Mom encouraged this too.

Marilyn- Hilarious-Me TOO-I am still trying to work them back to some degree. Mine never filled in too much after I plucked them.

  27. Balsam Fir, happy New Year to you. I love that another royal makes the list- the Queen is admirable. My father gave me a beautiful small doll with lovely details wearing the Order of the Garter. I still have her.

  29. Elfrida Beetle. Welcome, I hope you get to read the Ali article. She looks so wonderful in the pictures from Santa Fe. I have visited and love the climate and town-most memorable. Grace Kelly- another exquisite surely. pgt

  30. I was ten in 1963 , the year Jean Shrimpton was named "model of the year".
I thought she was fabulous though it was a bit depressing to have an idol who was so perfectly beautiful. Someone with a few more flaws would have been healthier :) Saw a recent photograph of her and was so relieved to see her with gray hair and sagging around the edges - much more human. I was older when Ali came along and made eyebrows O.K. Like you I was relieved.
I agree she was so cool (heard the other day that this word is definitely out for 2012) and yes she is still a stunner. Looking forward to the new T and C.

  31. I had an overlapping front tooth like Ali MacGraw, so I felt better about it. I would wear a knitted hat like hers and say, "I'm an alley cat... I'm a fawn" ja-x
