All loose things seem to drift down to the sea, and so did I.-
Louis L'Amour
But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let
the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make
not a bond of love:
let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of
your souls. -Kahil Gibran
The sea, the great unifier, is man's only hope.
Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: we are all in the same boat. -Jacques Yves Cousteau

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
Jacques Yves Cousteau
There is one knows not what sweet mystery about this
sea, whose gently awful stirrings seem to speak of some hidden soul
beneath.

Hello
ReplyDeleteA beautiful post. The Sorolla Museum in Madrid is one of my favourites. Joaquin loved his wife, children and home and was a master painter.

If not in Spain, then catch the MAGNIFICENT CYCLE the Hispanic Society of America owns in NYC. Superb, and the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute had a beautiful tribute just recently....I think Sargent really comes thru!!!
ReplyDeleteBoy, do I have a story for you about a horse and the sea!
ReplyDeleteYIKES!!
An Arabian horse was being filmed for a commercial on "our" beach in Summerland in the late afternoon......it was "spooked" by a wave and took off swimming straight out to sea! (It could see the Channel Islands)!
Fortunately; this had a happy ending. People on the shore knew people who work on the oil rigs; the sheriff, the Harbor Patrol, everyone went after this horse....(white) who looked like a seagull!
The oil rig people had more life vests and a stronger light!
Everyone worked together to save this horse!
3 miles this horse swam out! They found it.....they caught it (thanks to the huge light) they put life preservers under it......and brought it in very slowly.
The whole thing took 6 hours!
Drove the horse straight to the horse Vet; it had inhaled some water; which they had to get out of its lungs.......Home after 3 days. This horse won a horse show two weeks later!
An amazing feat of people acting as a team!
Penelope
ps its tail was wrapped around one of it's back legs.......It swam 3 miles out with only three legs working!
Sheesh!! I would not have ever repeated this to anyone; had it not had a happy ending!!
Sorolla, my favorite impressionist. The mystery of capturing the moment with perfect light.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this wonderful post. Mary
Gorgeous! The coolest I've ever seen though, was a couple on a water scooter on the Tvedestrand fjord. They were well into their seventies and speeding to say the least. They looked like they were having fun, her long, gray hair streaming in the wind behind her. The picture will stay with me, as will these.
ReplyDeleteI am transported by these paintings by Sorolla. He, like Sargent, is a "painter's painter" -an artist that is often mentioned by artists that I have met who have said that Sorolla is a favorite. Love your post -I can taste the atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteI am on my way to the beach today and these gorgeous paintings have put me in the mood, I am also a bit misty eyed. Thank you!
