OatMEAL

for Breakfast.
LUNCH?
DINNER?

I don't see any of THAT here.
No individuality,
No color.
Nothing YOUnique.
No Vision.
It's a pity, for only a touch of blue appears within the over 600 pages-

that's why the Oat Meal is blueberry.

it reads: from Gary Friedman, chairman & ceo "our new collection is void of dogma, full of passion and, most importantly, represents our aspirations of what we truly want to become.... To Steve & the Apple team: Thank you for inspiring our team. And, for proving that those people who are crazy enough to believe they can change the world are the one who usually do.

changing the world by removing it's color makes
Oatmeal.

Every.
Day.
Forever.
Life's really too short for that.

  1. You say it so beautifully

I worked as a Colour Consultant at Farrow & Ball. It was common for clients to spend hours agonizing over shades of off white and beige and then changing their mind.

    Have a colourful week

  2. LA, how unusual for this column to smite the unwashed instead of simply drawing a civil bath of its own. But for showing how they're willing to rip off a hero who can't defend himself - is there anything less admirable? - I have to pass along very sorrowful thanks. But I prefer to read your enthusiasms straight, so please go someplace happier next. :)

  5. I wrote 4 paragraphs.....about Restoration Hardware and that stupid fake stuff from China.....(unfinished) and oatmeal. and I pushed some wrong button. It must have meant I could say it in one sentence.

It is stupid; it is fake; it rings wrong. Stop it!!

I guess that says it all. What a terrible idea. "fake half-made "fake old" ridiculous furniture made in China....and you cannot even order it covered?

I will be fascinated to see how that sells. "Oatmeal" Boo hiss.

  6. You poor thing, Helen. I simply do not work for these people. I interview them......(they think they are only interviewing me!)

No way. those people I am just "way too busy for the rest of my life"! I realize you cannot do that in a retail store; but when you get to pick your career,,,,make sure you have those choices if you can! "No "PIA'S" !!!

There isn't enough money in the world............honestly.

  7. Your point is valid and good-humored--a rare combination. By the way, if you don't cook the oatmeal, it is much more enjoyable as a daily staple. I have no idea why people cook it ever.

  8. I couldn't agree more! When the Restoration catalogue arrived a little while ago, all I could think was, "I wouldn't want to live in a home without color- this is the color of depression."

    1. This seems to be the formula-"As Shown" not even imagine it with color. pgt

  9. Gaye, I so agree. How boring a colourless home/life is. Such a lack of immagination.
Give me colour! (and I don't mean insipid pastels)

  10. My rooms walls are painted in GOLDEN LAUGHTER, MOUSES-BACK, VERT DE TERRE, PARMA GRAY, MELON, with ceilings in CHINA DOLL and BLUE ANGEL...for their names evoke Sunshine, Grasses, Edibles, Beauty and Danger...of course Gilt, Silk, Leather and Wood are uplifted as WE are by this background.

American Visionaries in the Worlds of Business and Arts should be creating ALL in America! I fear the bank accounts of the few will be AMERICA'S end...and who shall serve them, the new rich, CHINA?

    1. I love seeing pieces made in America. Alas some of the things at Market I gravitated to were not-though at least make in the UK. For me and the most part High Point disappoints!

  14. Well first, I must say you've made me hungry for oatmeal, so I know what I'm having for breakfast. I believe I even have some blueberries lurking in the 'fridge... This was a good post. You know, I've been on the fence about Gary and Resto. On one hand I think the store needed a change and I give him a lot of credit for going way out there and retailing things that no one else is (other than a salvage yard), and insisting on quality when other retailers are looking to cut corners. I do hope he continues carrying quality furnishings. On the other hand, I find myself, like you, craving color. I've about had enough of the dark, dank castle look. It remains to be seen if he will keep RH current. I wonder if he senses the change in the air... N.G.

  15. years ago in connecticut, there were children who suffered a syndrome, known only on the east coast it seems, called "the beige syndrome."
these children ate only beige food.
    essentially, carbohydrates.

oatmeal, white bread, pasta minus the sauce, etc - you get the picture.

coming from spain, where my son was eating fresh sardines, pimientos, salmon and olives, it seemed alien and ridiculous.

i've had a laugh here today...thank you gaye

perhaps the beige syndrome has crossed over the line into adults!
