  1. Telling photograph which suggests that the coat was made for a much larger man, thus given to the sitter, as was the over-sized scarf. Then there is that shiny new hat. The tinted cheeks are a nice touch.

    1. Daniel- great eye-the homemade quality of the scarf was the first thing that caught my eye. I wanted to find some features that called to mind Bob C who had no top coat and wore a white blanket around is shoulders instead. In this case-I wonder that the top hat was borrowed-or on Loan from the photographer. pgt

    2. Yes—I wondered the same thing: who was the sitting and what was borrowed for the photograph? Fascinating!

  2. I think he looks so sweet........what do you think is the story? Why would he come in to have his portrait taken? WHY?

    1. Penelope- I agree. see some of my thoughts and Daniel's above for the picture story. I searched for some time thru old Victorian photographs of men on pinterest (of course). He depicts the mild mannered, kind Bob Cratchit in this instance, does that help with the sketch of what his story might have been?

    2. He also has really nice eyes. So curious! History is grand......isn't it?

Yes, yes it does help with the sketch! Can't wait to read? So fascinating!
I think his lady friend made him do it! What do YOU think?

He does look kind; but not so mild-mannered to me.....there seems to be fire in his eyes!
They are beautiful !!!! Blue I would BET!!!!

  3. I long for the day of the formal portrait. The "selfie" lacks the dignity of our pre-decessors, vetted out in their best, even if they are borrowed, as DJS suspects.
A Top Hat, in my opinion, never disappoints.... might be a tad overdressed according to some, but what do they know?? It is my default mode of attire.....

    1. Thea, I completely agree-and I am totally turned off by the "selfie"-as a communicator, and the word itself. pgt

    2. I completely agree! "selfies" and "selfie sticks" are just grossness beyond.......honestly. Unless in the privacy of your own home. On the street.....and in public. Gag. Just plain GAG! EEEEK!!!!

  4. The working poor. Not 19th century England, but a depiction of what is happening now and, sadly, right here.
    Keep on posting.

  5. I Adore Dickens-I have tried to read most of his books over the years-I am sure I've missed some! I must say too-all the adaptations on the BBC have been wonderful. There is a good novel-Drood by Dan Simmons I enjoyed immensely. An upcoming movie about his affair with Nelly Ternan, The Invisible Woman-Ralph Fiennes as Dickens! Look forward to that-
    Happy Holidays! PGT
