A Christmas Carol Stave III~ from the archives

Arcimboldo's "Fire"

Wonderful smells came from a Kitchen.
A rich pungent wood smoke scent filled the air- it would cling to my clothes when I left.
There were people milling about -chatting-mingling-making small talk.
There was Laughter.
There were no gowns or tuxedos-it was an informal crowd.
The place was a bit chaotic to be honest-but 'tis the season, so the hosts said.
Someone called out for "Myrtle"-know one knew a Myrtle...but there was a "Mabel."
The holiday decorations were minimal-a wreath, some tinsel,a stuffed toy dog wearing a Santa hat-but there were boxes of stuffed animals for the taking, boxes in green paper loaded with food.
People coming and going in Good Cheer & Good Will.

That was the scene at the Christian Help Center today.

"Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry?
What reason have you to be merry? You're poor enough." Scrooge

"At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge, ... it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir."
"Are there no prisons?"
"Plenty of prisons..."
"And the Union workhouses." demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"
"Both very busy, sir..."
"Those who are badly off must go there."
"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."
"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. -

  2. Oh dear, I believe I may have lost (or inadvertently posted too soon) a comment I was writing. I shall try again. For me Christmas is a time of giving, not only to those I hold dear, but also to those I do not know, who are desperate for food and shelter. This time of year I make sure to augment the usual staples that I bring with me to church for our food bank with treats and delicacies that I know the recipients will enjoy and find special in what must be a life overburdened with challenges. That a child, man, or woman, or dog goes hungry fills me with unending sadness. Ah well. Yet again you have struck a chord with me that shall resonate all the day long. As I've told you in person, I believe you have one of the most thought-provoking and unusual blogs out there. Keep writing, m'dear, please, you enrich us all. Reggie

  7. Thanks for this entry. Homeless people, poor people, destitutes, lonely people are too often forgotten in a time where Christmas is synonym to eating, drinking and buying.
