once upon at time

 .

the idea incubated by Diana Vreeland, Horst and Valentine Lawford in the pages of VOGUE, the conjuring of images in homes we want to occupy. No scratchy arrows or punch words evoking- "how to get the Look." The IDEA was to "read" - to "see" individualism. It doesn't exist anymore in the homes of the famous- and rich.

Why do we love certain houses, and why do they seem to love us? It is the warmth of our individual hearts reflected in our surroundings.  -
T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings

Do either of these women need introduction?
I'll remind you of these every now and then and please let me know...

HOUSES, GARDENS, DESIGN and ENTERTAINING? Where are you inspired?

Do such Vreelandesque collaborations exist and have I missed them?

  1. I think WoI still offers this up - that imperfectly perfect home. And, when we get to see designers' own homes - very often those seem distinctly individual.

  2. Ohh, I agree with you P.G.T. Everyone wants the trend, the cookie cutter. Precious little is original anymore. I get very cross thinking about it...but then I read your blog and feel much, much better! That photo of Gloria Vanderbilt is just...no words.

(I referenced one of your images in my post today.):)

  3. Individualism = Soul, Spirit

    To read. To see.

    "Caress the divine details."
    ~Vladimir Nabokov

”Seeing: We might say that the whole of life lies in that verb - if not ultimately, at least essentially.”
    ~Tielhard de Chardin

    To visioneer.

  4. The era of the hand-blocked Indienne fabric is one I enbraced wholeheartedly! Back in that day, I'd date it mid-70s, the heavily borderered fabric was readily available at Pier One in the form of "Indian bedspreads" and I bought it like crazy to put Lee Radziwill to shame. See the lampshade at the side of her daybed, yes I made certain I had those same shades, 3M spray adhesive + careful hemming was all it took. I made skirts, dresses, curtains, tablecloths, lampshades, ottomen, oh Lord everything for perhaps a decade. That was a great era and, need I add, that very same photo of Gloria V resplendent in crazy quilt has been affixed in my permanent notebook all this time, dates to early 80s I believe. Another standard bearer of the layered ethnic aesthetic was Leslie Blanch, and all three of these women were published in House & Garden magazine in their time. I don't know how I got from there to my current ascetic Axel Vervoordt state, but the journey has been sure and true.
